RECRUITMENT CALL: Technical Collaborator
Quarantine are seeking an experienced Technical Collaborator for our new live work, 12 Last Songs.
12 Last Songs will be part-performance, part-exhibition – a 12-hour-long piece that invites people into the room to demonstrate their labour, the work that they do. It will form a complex portrait of people and place, bringing people together from the place where it’s performed who might not normally meet.
Quarantine’s rehearsal process is rarely about repetition or arrival at a fixed version of the work, but rather about preparation for the live encounter with others. We expect and encourage everyone we work with to have a voice in the creation of the work.

We’re looking for a Technical Collaborator to join us initially for a period of development, culminating in a series of ‘open rehearsals’ with members of the public, where we try out certain aspects of the production.
What we’re looking for:
- An experienced technician with a background in LX
- Sound, AV and/ or digital experience desirable but not essential
- Must have the ability to multi-task, manage multiple jobs at varying stages of production, problem solve where necessary and remain calm under pressure
- A positive attitude and flexible approach are key
- The role is unlikely to be suitable for someone who likes to work with a script and arrive at a fixed way of running the production. It will never arrive at a ‘finished’ version, will be different every time we do it, so there’s a significant amount of problem-solving and ‘thinking on your feet’ during each performance; and this is part of our process
- Must be willing to appear “on stage” during open rehearsals. You would be present in your role as Technical Collaborator
- The Technical Collaborator will work alongside our Production Manager during rehearsals to get ready for the open rehearsals; and will also work with the rest of our creative team and production personnel at HOME
- May be required to programme and operate LX/sound/AV
- May be required to assist with the preparation of Risk Assessments, PAT testing if necessary
- To carry out all duties in line with Quarantine’s Health & Safety Policy, and uphold other policies and adhere to any specific Health & Safety and Covid related guidance and requirements from HOME
- Represent Quarantine as part of the production team when we have a public audience
3 weeks’ work across w/c 14 June, w/c 21 June, w/c 28 June & w/c 5 July 2021, at T2, HOME, Manchester, including Open Rehearsals (accessible to a public audience) from Wednesday 7 to Sunday 11 July. Exact schedule to be arranged in liaison with our Production Manager.
The Technical Collaborator would be engaged on a freelance contract and would be responsible for their own Tax and NI. Ideally, we’re looking for someone based in Manchester or the North West, but if the person we recruit does not live within 25 miles of Manchester, we can discuss accommodation and subsistence allowances.
This period during June/July 2021 is part of a process of developing this new work. Our aim is to do further work on the project and premiere it in the autumn (probably end September/October), most likely in Manchester, and we would hope that you would be available for this work too. Over the next 2 years, it will be presented in Manchester, Leeds, Cambridge, Brighton and Gateshead, and at additional UK and international locations.
